Heading south from Dargaville is the small village of Pouto. Although only 68km away, it seems like the end of the world, so what better place to kick back and unwind.
There are no shops here or fuel, so stock up before you head down and the last 10 km is gravel so drive accordingly.

Things to do in Pouto
The Pouto lighthouse is the main attraction, 7 kms along Ripiro beach, one of the last remaining wooden lighthouses, perched on top of a large sand dune and overlooking what the locals call the grave yard where many ships were lost at the entrance of the harbour. Walkers, 4 wheel drive enthusiasts and quad bike riders gather to enjoy the vast expanse of the dunes and the magnificent 360° views.
Known also for the fishing ( not many go home disappointed ) there is always a tale to be told about the days catch or the one that got away.

Pouto Marine Hall Campground
Reservation and Cancellation Policy
Due to an increasing number of cancellations and “no shows” Pouto Marine Hall Campground will now enforce the following policy regarding bookings and cancellation in fairness to those who have been previously turned away from a supposedly full campground only for people to not show up.
Reservations
When contacting Pouto Marine Hall Campground (PMHC) your reservation is only confirmed when payment is received in our bank account for 100% of your intended stay during any of the following dates:
- December 20 to January 10
- Auckland Anniversary Weekend (Friday-Monday)
- *Waitangi Weekend (Friday-Monday)
- Easter Weekend (Thursday-Tuesday)
- *ANZAC Weekend (Friday-Monday)
- Matariki (Friday-Monday)
- Labour Weekend (Friday-Monday)
Cancellation Policy
Confirmed bookings can be cancelled up to 14 days prior to your first night booked with full refund.
Cancellations between 7-14 days will be 50% refunded at the discretion of the PMHC Committee.
No refund is possible for cancellation less than 7 days prior to your first night booked.
However to demonstrate our goodwill, if we can rebook your camping site, we will refund you up to 90% of the fee, at our discretion.
If you have already arrived on site and choose to leave early then no refunds apply for unused nights.
Please note if exceptional circumstances exist (eg. Cyclone Gabrielle) then the PMHC Committee are happy to revisit this at their discretion.

Nice small camp. Great facilities, view and access to the beach. A challenging walk to the... lighthouse and back. Its about 15km so give yourself 3.5-4 hours!read more

Stayed with my family for 10 days. We all loved it so much. Great place for fishing and driving on... sandy beach/hills. J&J (John and Janene) excellent host. John always went an extra mile with his smile. I wish I could do more than 5 stars. Absolute legends!!!!read more

Reviews from 10 months ago clearly from a group of people that didn't want to follow the campground... rules. This wee campground at the end of nowhere has excellent facilities: toilets are clean and don't smell, and showers are large with plenty of space to put your stuff. The views are to die for and the caretakers very friendly and very helpful. We took a really fun trip in the 4WD and quad bikes over the dunes to the lighthouse with them as well and it was nothing but awesome camping. No complaints here!read more

Too many negative reviews about this place. This place was great. Amazing hostess. She was so... lovely, so caring, so funny and helpful. The little shop was amazing on such a hot day for ice cream and soft drink. The facilities where so good exactly what we want after a long day riding. We got told about this beach super close which was incredible. Just a lovely experience and highly recommended to stay hereread more
